Can Dry Eyes Cause Headaches?

That gritty, tired feeling in your eyes doesn’t always stay put. Sometimes it creeps up into your forehead and settles in as a dull, nagging headache. It’s more common than you’d think, and there’s a real reason behind it.

Yes, dry eyes can cause headaches. It usually comes down to strain. When your eyes work overtime to stay comfortable, that effort travels straight into the muscles around your forehead, temples, and eye sockets.

Squinting and straining to keep things in focus is often the first sign something’s off, and you might not even notice you’re doing it. That extra effort can turn into pressure behind your eyes or a steady ache across your brow. For some people, dry eye symptoms and migraines overlap, too, which makes it tricky to tell where one problem ends and the other begins.

What Is Dry Eye, Anyway?

Dry eye happens when your tears can’t keep the surface of your eyes properly moist. Tears aren’t just for crying. They coat your eyes, wash away dust, and keep your vision clear with every blink.

There are 2 main reasons that moisture runs low. Your eyes might not make enough tears, or the tears you do make evaporate too quickly and leave your eyes dry between blinks.

Signs You Might Notice

Dry eye doesn’t always feel dry, oddly enough. It can show up in a few surprising ways, like:

  • A stinging, burning, or scratchy feeling
  • A gritty, sandy sensation
  • Redness
  • Blurry vision
  • Watery eyes
  • Eyes that feel tired by the afternoon

What a Dry Eye Headache Feels Like

These headaches tend to sit close to your eyes. You might feel tension wrapping around your forehead and temples, like a band slowly tightening. Others feel a heavy pressure behind the eye socket that lingers after a long day of reading or screen time.

Why Dry Eye Lead to Headaches

A few things happen at once when your eyes are dry, and each one can nudge a headache along.

Eye Strain and Muscle Tension

When your vision blurs from dryness, you squint to sharpen it. That squinting overworks the small muscles around your eyes. Keep it up long enough, and that tension climbs into your forehead and temples as a dull ache.

Light Sensitivity

Healthy tears form a smooth layer that helps focus light evenly. When that layer breaks down, light scatters instead. A bright room or a sunny window can suddenly feel harsh, and that discomfort can spread into a headache.

Everyday Triggers

Small habits and surroundings add up faster than you’d think. Keep an eye out for:

  • Screen time, since you blink far less while staring at a phone or monitor
  • Dry, windy, or smoky air that pulls moisture from your eyes
  • Age, hormonal changes, or certain medications that lower tear production

Ease Dry Eye Headaches at Home

You can ease a lot of the discomfort with a few simple changes. Try these and see what helps most:

  • Run a humidifier to add moisture back into dry indoor air.
  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  • Lay a warm compress over your closed eyes.
  • Drink water throughout the day to stay hydrated.

When Drops Can Help

Eye drops can be a handy tool when your eyes need a boost. Consider:

  • Artificial tears for quick, soothing relief you can use anytime
  • Medicated drops for persistent symptoms, prescribed by your optometrist after a thorough assessment.

When to Book an Eye Exam

Home care helps a lot of people, but it doesn’t fix everything. If your eyes stay dry or the headaches keep coming back, take that as your cue to book a visit. You’ll want to come in if:

  • Home care isn’t bringing relief after 2 weeks
  • The pain or dryness keeps returning no matter what you try

During an exam, your optometrist can check your tear film and look for what’s really behind the dryness. From there, they can build a plan matched to your eyes and your day-to-day life, so you’re not guessing anymore.

Give Your Eyes a Break

Dry eyes and headaches don’t have to be part of your daily routine. A few small changes at home can go a long way, and your optometrist can help sort out the rest.

At St. Marys Optometry, the team takes the time to listen and get to the bottom of what’s bothering you. Book your eye exam today, and let’s get you feeling comfortable again.

My journey into optometry began when I was 15 and got my first pair of glasses. Suddenly, the world came into focus—details I hadn’t even realized I was missing became clear, and it made all the difference, especially in school. That experience was life-changing, and it sparked something in me: I wanted to give others the gift of clear vision, too. That realization set me on the path to earning my degree at the University of Waterloo and, eventually, to opening St. Marys Optometry in 2010.

Since then, I’ve been dedicated to providing comprehensive eye care to patients of all ages, from little ones experiencing their first eye exams to adults who want to preserve their vision for years to come. I love connecting with my patients and making every visit a comfortable and positive experience. I’m passionate about uncovering the unique vision challenges my patients face so I can recommend the best solutions. By offering personalized, customized products and services, I help ensure every individual’s needs are met with care and precision.

One of my favourite things about St. Marys Optometry is the incredible team I get to work with every day. They are the backbone of the practice, and I truly couldn’t function without them! Each member of the SMO team cares deeply about our patients, going above and beyond to provide exceptional vision care. But they don’t just care about our patients—they care about each other, too, supporting one another in countless ways both in and out of the office. I genuinely love each member of our team and feel thankful for them every single day.

One of my favourite team traditions takes place each fall and holds a special place in my heart. We attend a conference together, spending the day learning, networking, and drawing inspiration from our colleagues in the optical industry. But the real magic happens after dinner, when we hit the dance floor! As someone who has always loved to dance, sharing the joy of dancing with my SMO team is an experience that’s truly unbeatable. Despite our different tastes in music and the range of ages in our group, it’s no surprise that we come together so effortlessly, making unforgettable memories while having a blast.

Outside the office, I value staying active and having fun. My favourite spot to stay active is the pickleball court, where I enjoy games with family and friends, as well as competing in tournaments—often teaming up with my longtime friend and fellow optometrist, Dr. Laurie. If you want to see what we’re up to check out @pickleball_visionaries on Instagram. I also love strolling through town with my husband Mike and our dogs, Scout and Hunter. At home, I enjoy spending quality time with Mike and our teens, Megan and Luke. And when it’s time to unwind, nothing beats a cozy moment with a cup of tea, a square of dark chocolate, and a good book or TV show.

As a longtime local (almost 30 years!), I’m passionate about supporting our vibrant community. If you’re new to St. Marys or looking to explore, I’d highly recommend checking out some of my favourite spots: TuttCo for the most delicious meals, Dunny’s Source for Sports where you can get everything you need for an active lifestyle, O’Grady’s Clothing and Accessories when it’s time to look your best, Sensations Salon and Day Spa for haircare and other services, and The Town & Country Cheese Shoppe where they make the best sandwiches as well as offering a massive variety of cheese. They’re all fantastic places to experience the heart of our town.

For me, optometry isn’t just about eye care—it’s about making a difference in people’s lives. At St. Marys Optometry, I’m proud to combine professional expertise with a personal touch, creating a space where everyone can feel at home while receiving the highest quality care.
